Assistant Chief of Police Joe Vargas has announced his retirement from the New Braunfels Police Department.
The Assistant Chief’s last day will be January 31st, 2021.
Vargas has served the City of New Braunfels for more than 30 years, starting his career with the city as an Animal Control Officer while attending the police academy at night. Once he completed the academy, he transferred to the New Braunfels Police Department as a patrol officer. During his career, Vargas served in various roles including patrol officer, investigator, traffic motorcycle officer, SWAT operator, and SWAT Commander. He also received several promotions throughout his tenure with NBPD, including the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and finally he is retiring as Assistant Chief of Police.
Chief Keith Lane currently serves as the interim Chief of Police and the City is currently working with an outside consultant to finalize the position profile and recruiting plan for the nationwide search for the next Chief. It is anticipated the position will be advertised within the next two weeks. Once a new Police Chief is sworn in, a search for the new Assistant Chief of Police will begin.
