WHAT DO I DO IF AN EMPLOYEE TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19?
FOR YOUR FACILITY:
• In most cases, you do not need to shut down your facility. Refer to your industry’s licensing agency for more information and industry-specific regulations.
• If it has been less than 7 days since the sick employee has been in the facility, close off any areas used for prolonged periods of time by the sick person. Clean and disinfect those areas.
• If it has been 7 days or more since the sick employee used the facility, additional cleaning and disinfection is not necessary. Continue routinely cleaning and disinfecting all high-touch surfaces in the facility.
FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES:
• The individual may return to work when all three of the following criteria are met: at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications); and the individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
• Determine which employees may have been exposed to the virus and may need to take additional precautions. Exposure is defined as being within 6 feet of an individual who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 for 10 minutes or longer within the last 48 hours.
• Inform employees of their possible exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace but maintain confidentiality as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
• Most workplaces should follow the Public Health Recommendations for Community-Related Exposure and instruct potentially exposed employees to stay home for 14 days, telework if possible, and self-monitor for symptoms.
• Critical infrastructure workplaces should follow the guidance on Implementing Safety Practices for Critical Infrastructure Workers Who May Have Had Exposure to a Person with Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19.
WHAT DO I DO IF AN EMPLOYEE BELIEVES THEY’VE BEEN EXPOSED TO SOMEONE WITH COVID-19?
• Confirm exposure. Exposure is defined as being within 6 feet of an individual who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 for 10 minutes or longer within the last 48 hours.
• The employee should:
- Stay home until 14 days after last exposure and maintain social distance (at least 6 feet) from others at all times.
- Self-monitor for symptoms to include checking temperature twice a day and watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19.
- Avoid contact with people at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
- Follow CDC guidance if symptoms develop.
HOW TO PREVENT AND REDUCE TRANSMISSION AMONG EMPLOYEES:
• Encourage employees to wear cloth face coverings in the workplace, if appropriate.
• Actively encourage sick employees to stay home.
• Conduct daily health checks.
• Implement policies and practices for social distancing in the workplace.
• Educate employees about steps they can take to protect themselves at work and at home.
• Practice routine cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched objects and surfaces.
WHERE CAN I GET TESTED?
• If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and want to get tested, call your healthcare provider first.
• You can also call the Comal County Public Health Department at 830-221-1150 or visit tdem.texas.gov/covid-19 for a map of local testing facilities.
• Two kinds of tests are available for COVID-19: viral tests and antibody tests. A viral test tells you if you have a current infection and an antibody test tells you if you had a previous infection.
• An antibody test may not be able to show if you have a current infection, because it can take 1-3 weeks after infection to make antibodies. We do not know yet if having antibodies to the virus can protect someone from getting infected with the virus again, or how long that protection might last.
