On today’s date (06-28-19), at approximately 11:00am, the New Braunfels Police Department was called to the 200 block of Clemens Avenue for a report of a Disturbance with Weapons. Officers arrived and found that a 29-year old male armed with a handgun had locked himself inside a bathroom and refused to come out.
The NBPD Crisis Negotiations Team was called to the scene and began more than 2 hours of negotiations. During this time, for the safety of nearby residents, surrounding homes were evacuated and a “shelter in place” reverse 911 call was made to homes in the immediate area. The NBPD SWAT team was also activated and responded to the scene.
At approximately 1pm, negotiations with the subject broke down and, simultaneously, officers noticed the smell of smoke coming from the bathroom. The decision was then made to make entry into the bathroom. During that process, the subject exited the bathroom and pointed a handgun at officers. Officers fired, striking the subject. New Braunfels Fire and EMS was already staged at the scene, so they immediately responded and transported the subject in serious but stable condition to the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). No officers were injured during the incident.
As of this release, officers remain on scene, and the Texas Rangers have been called in to conduct an investigation into the officer involved shooting. A second reverse 911 call has been made to homes in the area letting them know that they no longer need to shelter in place.
