On today’s date (March 30, 2019), at approximately 12:23 am, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department were dispatched to the 2800 block of State Hwy 46 S for reports of a major motor vehicle head on collision.
Once on scene, officers contacted a witness who observed a 2013 Toyota pickup, being operated by a 19-year-old male from Garden Ridge, Texas, swerving back and forth in the southbound lanes before leaving the southbound lanes of State Hwy 46 S into the northbound lanes of State Hwy 46 S. The Toyota pickup drove head on into the path of a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu being driven northbound on State Hwy 46 S by a 23-year-old female from New Braunfels. The collision between both vehicles caused the Toyota pickup to land on its driver side doors, with the driver and the 22-year-old female passenger trapped in the vehicle until the fire department arrived and removed the driver and passenger from the pickup. Both occupants of the Toyota pickup were transported by ambulance to Seton Hospital in Austin Texas.
The Chevrolet Malibu sustained considerable damage to the front of the vehicle trapping the driver and her 2-month old passenger in the vehicle. Witnesses were able to safely remove the infant in her child safety seat before medics arrived. The infant was transported to Resolute Hospital as a precaution. The fire department was able to extricate the driver of the Malibu and she was transported by Air Life to SAMMC in critical condition.
The 2800 block of State Hwy 46 S was closed for 3.5 hours. The crash is under investigation by members of the New Braunfels Police Department Traffic Unit.
