On today’s date (12-05-18), at approximately 3:00pm, officers responded to the area of Rueckle Road and Morningside Drive for a report that numerous shots had been fired in the area. Officers arrived and also heard a number of gunshots, so a perimeter around the area was immediately established, affecting Morningside Drive, Rueckle Road, and the northbound I-35 frontage road in that area. Residents in that immediate area were also notified through the Emergency Notification System (reverse 911) to stay inside their homes until an all-clear was given, and bus traffic from nearby Morningside Elementary School was rerouted around the affected area.
With the help of a Texas DPS helicopter, three adult males (ages 18, 19, and 21 – all from New Braunfels) were located in the brush line and all three were detained without incident. A subsequent search for the firearms they were using is ongoing, but the initial results of the investigation indicate that the males were not shooting to harm, but rather to recklessly discharge their weapons. No injuries or damages have been reported as a result of this incident.
The all-clear has since been given to residents in the area and most routes have resumed normal traffic, with the exception of a portion of Rueckle Road in the immediate area of the scene. The three male suspects have been transported to the Comal County Jail where they face criminal charges for the reckless discharge of firearms.
The New Braunfels Police Department would like to commend the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, the Comal County Constable’s Office from Pct. 3, and Texas DPS for their assistance during this incident. NBPD would also like to thank the residents and drivers in the area of this incident for their patience while officers ensured the safety of all involved.
