UPDATE: The victim from Tuesday’s drowning in the Comal River has been identified as 29-year old Jorge Chapa Gonzalez from Baytown, TX. Next of kin has been notified. Although no foul play is suspected, the man’s death remains under investigation pending final results of an autopsy. Additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.

ORIGINAL RELEASE: On today’s date (07/04/17), at approximately 11:10am, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department responded to the Comal River in the 300 block of South Gilbert Ave (which is the area of the river just downstream from the San Antonio Street Bridge) for reports of a possible drowning. First responders arrived and found that a group of river-goers had located a male in the water who was not conscious or breathing. Once first responders arrived, lifesaving measures were attempted, but were unsuccessful. Justice of the Peace for Pct.3 Mike Rust responded to the scene and pronounced the man deceased. The identity of the man has not yet been determined. Although no foul play is suspected, the man’s death remains under investigation pending final results of an autopsy. Additional information will be released as that investigation progresses.
