Efforts of residents, property owners, business and community stakeholders, has culminated in a public hearing draft of the Envision New Braunfels Comprehensive Plan — a plan designed to enhance the city’s quality of life over the next 15-plus years.

The project’s steering committee included Ron Reaves (Chair) Councilman, District 3; Michael Meek, President, New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce; Scott Haag, Comal County Commissioner, Precinct 2; Andrew Kim, Superintendent, Comal ISD; Jack Shanafelt, Guadalupe County Commissioner, Precinct 2; Stuart Hansmann, President, New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation; Randy Moczygemba, Superintendent, New Braunfels ISD; Atanacio Campos, Vice President, NBU Board; and Cory Elrod, Chairman, Planning Commission.

Nine assembled advisory groups focused on issues surrounding growth and future land use; urban design and cultural, heritage and historic preservation; education and youth; parks and recreation; economic competitiveness; tourism; transportation; natural resources and infrastructure; and facilities, services and capital improvements.

“Recognition goes to everyone who helped put together a comprehensive vision for New Braunfels,” Reaves said. “Because of them, we were able to put together a guide book, not a how-to book, which defines our values and our vision for New Braunfels. When people come here – seeking business or residential – we’ll be able to show them the comprehensive plan, which states our values, what we believe in and welcome them to become part of it.”

Christopher Looney, Planning and Community Development Director, and consultants from Design Workshop will present the draft plan to the New Braunfels Planning Commission on July 3.

The final draft of Envision New Braunfels will be presented for City Council adoption later this summer.

The plan can be viewed at envisionnewbraunfels.org.

Councilman Ron Reaves and City Planning Director Christopher Looney provided an update on Envision New Braunfels to the members of the Economic Development Foundation at their recent meeting. The event was held at the McKenna Events Center where members heard of the innovation being employed in the new plan, asked questions, and gained insight about the community-driven process.

200 attendees were present to hear about Envision New Braunfels and the Economic Impact of Tourism in our community.

Envision New Braunfels is an overarching, long range vision born out of broad input from resident. The plan will supersede the previous plan, adopted in 1999 and updated in 2006.

To date, Envision New Braunfels has included kickoff, visioning, goals, key findings, actions and scenarios phases. It is currently in the phase in which a document is being finalized. The next step is review and approval by the City Planning Commission, then consideration by the City Council.
