All food service personnel who work in a food establishment in the City of New Braunfels are required by local ordinance to obtain a food handlers card from the city. The Health Department staff instructs the regularly scheduled food handlers classes and issue permits to attendees. The course covers basic food safety practices such as proper handwashing, personal hygiene, cooking, cooling, reheating, ware washing, and other additional information. All food handlers cards are valid for three years from date they are issued.

If you are currently enrolled in school you may be able to take a test for your food handlers card. If you can not attend the food handlers training classes you may be able to take a test in our office any time from Monday thru Friday before 4:00 P.M. except during our regularly scheduled food handler class periods. You must present proof of school enrollment at the time of testing. Each food establishment may obtain a study guide for their student employees for a $5 fee.
