If you’ve ever watched any of the many cake decorating competitions on television and thought, “I wish I could do that,” here’s your chance to have your cake and eat it, too. On Saturday, July 27th, the Westside Community Center (WCC) will be hosting its
annual Edible Book Contest from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The Center is located at 2932 South IH-35 Frontage Road in New Braunfels.
“The contest is open to anyone who loves books and cakes,” said Public Service Librarian Alix Samuels. “We’ve seen such creative entries from both kids and adults in the last couple of years, and we can’t wait to see what people will come up this time.”
The contest rules are straightforward. Each edible creation must: include a fiction or non-fiction book or character; be family-friendly; be at least 95 percent edible and capable of being on display for three to four hours without refrigeration; and have a disposable base that is no larger than 18 inches by 18 inches. The WCC will dispose of creations not picked up by the end of the show.
Each entry will be judged on its originality and creativity; skill and construction; visual appeal; and tie-in with the book being depicted. Awards will be given in four categories: Best of Show Adult Book, Best of Show Young Adult Book, Best of Show Children’s Book and People’s Choice.
The Edible Book Contest is open to the public, but anyone interested must complete and turn in the official entry form — available from the WCC library, the New Braunfels Public Library, or online — by Thursday, July 25th.
