The Westside Community Center and New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) are teaming up again this year to host a family-friendly Earth Day celebration on Monday, April 22, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Westside Community Center (WCC).
“Throughout the year, NBU’s Environmental Affairs teams host conservation events to teach the importance of conserving our natural resources,” said NBU Environmental Affairs Manager Suzanne Williams. “The Earth Day event allows NBU to partner with the Westside Community Center to bring a variety of fun and exciting educational opportunities under one roof. We are looking forward to this year’s event.”
“We love partnering with NBU, and this year’s event will have something for everyone,” said Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Hernandez. “We have so many wonderful vendors from the New Braunfels community ready to educate with fun activities related to gardening, conservation, recycling and so much more.”
This year NBU Resource Conservation Representative Kristin Martinez will introduce a Droplet Dash, a short indoor race with separate times scheduled for pre-K; kindergarten and first grade; second and third grade; and fourth and fifth grade. Prizes will be awarded, and while the Droplet Dash event is free, registration is required and can be completed online at https://nbtexas.libcal.com/event/5260382 or by calling the Westside Community Center at 830-221-4630.
“Kristin spends a lot of time putting together fun conservation activities at the community center, so collaborating with her for another Earth Day event at WCC has been great, and we’re excited about this new event,” said Hernandez.
Familiar favorites will also return, including rain barrel painting with NBU and the paper bag recycling contest. Paper bags are available now from the Westside Community Center library and come complete with the contest entry form and rules. All paper bags should be decorated using recycled materials and other materials — acrylics, watercolor, oil pastels, stamps, etc. — as desired. Contest entry is open to the public. Earth Day 2019 attendees will be able to vote for the “Public Choice” winner during the event, and other categories will also be judged for a prize. Completed bags must be turned in to the WCC by noon on Monday, April 22nd — the day of the event.
The Earth Day 2019 event will also include an herb scavenger hunt, garden activities, face painting, a plant sale, yoga for kids, tastings from Comal ISD’s Chef Mario, activities with New Braunfels Public Library children’s staff, special musical guest Kristi Grider, and delicious options of tasty pulled pork tacos, sausage wraps and snow cones for regular vendor fees.
Exhibitors this year include the Comal Master Gardeners, the Native Plant Society, Master Naturalists, City of New Braunfels Recycling and Parks and Recreation departments, Comal County AgriLife stream trailer, Fischer Park staff, the New Braunfels Public Library’s RIOMobile, McKenna Children’s Museum, Headwaters at the Comal and more.
The Humane Society of the New Braunfels area will also have a special opportunity for pet adoptions on site. Contact the Humane Society for more details at 830-629-5287.
